For The Birds of Acadiana / Wildlife Rehabilitation
Our Story
For The Birds of Acadiana is an essential responder to threats like invasive predator encounters, collisions, fishing gear and habitat loss. We consider our work a crucial aspect of migratory bird conservation.
An alarming new study reveals that the population of North American birds has dropped nearly 30% since 1970. Louisiana is the southernmost welcome center along the Mississippi Flyway. Our region of Louisiana, particularly the coastal areas, provides a critical link between the North American nesting grounds and the wintering areas of South and Central America for many songbirds, waterfowl and other neotropical migratory birds.
ABOUT US
For The Birds of Acadiana is a supporter-funded avian wildlife rehabilitation facility located in the heart of Lafayette, Louisiana. Our mission is to educate and promote a responsible concern for the preservation and conservation of federally protected birds through our efforts of rehabilitation and release.
We rehabilitate nearly one thousand injured, ill and orphaned wild songbirds, waterbirds and waterfowl annually.
We rely on the generous donations of supporters like you to help us provide the necessities in order to increase the chances of survival and release of our federally protected feathered friends.
Although we are regulated by state and federal agencies, we do not receive state or federal funds so your donation is vital in sustaining our mission.
RESCUE
With the help of private citizens, volunteers and local animal control agencies, we admit and care nearly a thousand injured, ill and orphaned wild birds annually.REHABILITATION
Depending on the illness or injury, recovery may take just a few days or can involve weeks of intense supportive care (with the guidance of select, local veterinarians). Some birds admitted to our facility aren't injured at all - these birds may be displaced, orphaned or just too young to care for themselves. If they cannot be reunited with their parents, these birds are given special, around the clock care.
EDUCATION
We advocate for the responsible concern and conservation of our federally protected feathered friends. State and federal laws protect nearly all wild birds. We are available for educational talks or presentations. Contact us for more information.
RELEASE
Our primary goal is releasing our rehabilitated bird patients back into their natural, wild habitats.
Release day is an exciting moment for everyone involved.
It is against the law to possess wildlife, injured, ill/orphaned birds, the nests, feathers or the eggs of wild birds without LDWF and USFWS Migratory Bird Rehabilitation permits - even if you plan to release them.
